Ah Xian (b.1960, Beijing – lives and works in Sydney) is one of Australia’s most prominent contemporary artists, known for his striking life-sized sculptures made of materials including cloisonné, porcelain, concrete, fibreglass, bronze, jade and Ox-bone inlay and latex.
A self-taught painter, Ah Xian became a professional artist in the 1980s and has been involved in the avant-garde art movement in China. Since moving to Australia, Ah Xian has exhibited across the country and around the world since the 1990s.
His work was recently included in Clay Dynasty (2021 – Powerhouse Museum), The way we eat and A drop of Water (2021 and 2020 – Art Gallery of New South Wales).
Ah Xian’s work is held in notable collections in Australia and overseas including Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney; Art Gallery of South Australia, Adelaide; Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney; National Gallery of Australia, Canberra; National Gallery of Victoria; Melbourne; National Portrait Gallery, Canberra; Powerhouse Museum, Sydney; QAGOMA, Brisbane; Museum of Old and New Art, Hobart; National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa; Asia Society Museum, New York; the Kirishima Open-air Art Museum, Kagoshima, Japan.
